Career advice for musician? - Small Business Coaching

Question by fladabosco: Career advice for musician?
I am a musician and teacher and have a few mornings a week free and was wondering if any of you have advice about what I could do on those mornings. I have enough time to practice.

I have experience as a technical lead and manager at a major software company, although it was a long time ago. I took 45,000 technical support phone calls there. I wrote and delivered training and wrote over 600 technical articles.

I did a lot of database and some financial work at the software company. I manage my family?s investments and know a lot of the basics. I occasionally buy and sell options, have some bonds, etc. I am not an expert but an enthusiast. I worked in the flower business for a year buying directly from farmers. When I was young I cooked in a very expensive French restaurant and still cook a lot. Right now I teach part time at a major university and do lot of performing and coaching.

Sorry for the long post and I appreciate any suggestions. I am doing fine as a musician but would like to dive into something else for those free hours.

Thanks

Fladabosco

I would recommend something along the same musical lines. Writing music for films or TV (rather than from your own inspiration) could be a challenge, but also financially rewarding.
Just a thought.
Good luck.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP) ? A new U.S. Senate candidate in Virginia wears a tie, has a campaign website and even launched an ad. One big difference? He has a thick coat of fur.

Hank the cat has thrown his paw into the race, running to mock the political status quo. The cat's owner, Anthony Roberts, says he and his partner set up the campaign as an inside joke. But the campaign's website has crashed after a recent spate of publicity.

Hank's campaign posters show the Maine Coon gazing upward, wearing a tie. An ad says Hank, a moderate, will work to make sure America stays the greatest land of all.

Hank is running for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. James Webb, a Democrat.

Get Organized With These Personal Finance Tips

When trying to build a savings, every bit you put it in can help. Instead of purchasing a cup of coffee every morning, brew your own at home or at work. If you take your own coffee you can save a lot of money. Replace your auto commute with a public transit ride. That could add up to hundreds of dollars a month in savings. These small amounts of money add up quickly, and you can put those funds towards bigger and better things. Enjoying such rewards can be sweeter than any cup of coffee.

Avoid eating out to save money. Making your own meals is cheaper, as well healthier for you.

You?re not alone if you make a mistake or two with your personal finances. If you?ve only ever bounced one check or overdrafted once, ask the bank manager if they will waive the fee. This trick can only be used by someone who has kept positive balances and hasn?t used overdrafts before.

Keeping track of your expenses and income is a key component of getting your personal finances in order. Start your written budget by listing all of your monthly expenses. Include both large and small expenses, because everything adds up. Don?tforget bills that aren?t paid each month. These may include auto insurance, property taxes or propane costs. You can get an approximate monthly payment for these by averaging the previous year?s cost. Add all the expenses up, and then you can calculate how much you have to spend and save each month.

From every check, take out savings first. If you try to save the money after the month has gone by, you will find that you do not have any money left. If you know the money is unavailable, it lessens the chance you will spend it.

An access to savings that are immediately available is important. This savings fund should be an account with a high yield. Online banks often have federally insured savings accounts with a higher interest rate.

When it comes to foreign exchange trading, let profits run in order to be a success. This tactic should be used in moderation without greed getting in the way. Once you are happy with the profit that you have made on a trade, you need to know when it is time to withdraw.

The Internet can be a great way to find discounts and coupons that are not otherwise available. Use these methods for locating coupons to help you get into the habit of saving the most amount of money to put yourself in a better financial situation.

If your entire check is gone after paying the bills, look for non-essential places you can cut down on spending. If you try to cut an enjoyable activity, such as dining out, out of your budget entirely, you?ll probably give up on your budget after just a few months. However, if you just cut back half the dinners out every month, you can save money and still enjoy dining out.

Many products out there have some kind of a warranty on them, and if something should go wrong with the product, it would tend to happen during the period of the warranty. Extended warranties can end up costing you more money in the long run.

If you want financial stability, it?s important to have an established savings account into which you make regular deposits. If you do this, you won?t need a loan in an emergency, and you will be able to handle any crisis that occurs. It doesn?t matter if you save a whole lot each month or just a little; what is important is that there is a contribution each month.

Knowing the value of ones possessions can make all the difference in preventing a person from throwing out or selling an item for next to nothing, when it was really a valuable item. If someone sells a classic piece of furniture for its true value, rather than throwing it out, their personal finances stand to improve.

Always have an idea of what your credit report shows. You have the option to receive a free copy of your credit report, and many ways to keep tabs on it throughout the year for free. Check your credit yourself at least twice in a year so you can ensure that you have not been a victim of identity theft.

There is a chance your credit score may drop when you are working to repair it. Don?t worry too much about this if you have done nothing wrong. Keep on working toward getting good things on your credit score, and your score will improve.

Neglecting your personal finances may cause you a lot of trouble, but with some patience and a little bit of work, you will be able to do it. Take advantage of research and resources, like professional financial consultants. Using the tips listed above will help you to make better financial decisions in the future.

Auto union will taunt Romney from the sky at Daytona 500

The United Auto Workers will taunt Mitt Romney from the sky while he attends Daytona 500 on Sunday. Plane banner: "Mitt Romney: Let Detroit Go Bankrupt."

The union says 31 of 43 cars racing tomorrow are made by one America's big three auto makers.

"Had the country taken Romney's advice, turning his back on the Auto Industry and the millions who depend on it during their darkest hour, what would have become of NASCAR? An American race ruled by European cars? Porches, BMW and Audi's circling the track? NASCAR, like baseball and the American Auto Industry itself, is an iconic part of this country and its spirit. UAW's message to Mitt Romney? Don't bet against us, don't bet against America," the UAW said.

Michael Jackson - A Modern Master with a Child's Heart

It's a well-known fact Michael Jackson had great care and concern for children. He also maintained a childlike persona, speaking openly to interviewers about his belief that people should retain the innocence of a child. What may not be as talked about, however, is that Jackson's interest in children and the childlike was parallel to other one-of-a-kind creative geniuses of the modern era. From his playfulness and his fondness for children, to his belief that he had a gift from God to share with the world, Michael Jackson had many of the same behaviors scholars document in the lives of modern masters such as, Einstein, Picasso, Stravinsky, and many more. These individuals, as well as Jackson, had one particular common characteristic of creativity, which Harvard psychologist, Howard Gardner calls that "special amalgam of the childlike and the adultlike," both in personality and in ideas.

All creative masters combine the "childlike and the adultlike ...

and may feel that this fusion ... is an indispensable part of their genius," Gardner notes. And, they seek to preserve these traits and cultivate their features. For instance, in 1984, Jackson spent a week with his friend, Jane Fonda and her father, Henry Fonda, during the filming of On Golden Pond. Speaking then with Time reporter Jay Cocks, she said, "His intelligence is instinctual and emotional like a child's. If any artist loses that childlikeness, you lose a lot of creative juice. So Jackson creates around himself a world that protects his creativity,"

In her recent account of helping him locate and purchase the property known now as Neverland Valley Ranch, real estate broker, Gloria Rhoads Berlin said, "He viewed Neverland as an opportunity to have the childhood he never had" and he intended it to be a "paradise for all the children of the world."

Princess Elizabeth von Thurn und Taxis and her brother, Prince Albert von Thurn und Taxis, visited Neverland as children.

They met and befriended Jackson through their mother, Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis. In a recent issue of Finch's Quarterly Review, where she is the features editor, Princess Elizabeth said,
"Michael had everything a child's heart could possibly desire. We played for hours ....
He loved throwing water bombs and super soaking one another. He really turned into a
kid. He didn't mind his hair getting drenched and the make-up he was wearing washing off,
he was enjoying himself and that was that. We were young enough to enjoy the children's paradise but old enough to really remember and realize how special this actually was."

This childlikeness can be a positive trait when it features innocence or freshness, or it can be negative when it's selfish or retaliatory. For instance, the composer Stravinsky, though interested in the world of children, did not act like a child. Rather, he picked fights to win and to humiliate the "enemy." Cite As for retaliation, some of the songs on Jackson's HIStory album are angry diatribes against former Los Angeles District Attorney Tom Sneddon's 1993 raid on Neverland, especially the song "D.S. is a Cold Man." [Some people assert that Sneddon had a "vendetta" against Jackson.] The raid came about in response to claims of molestation from the father of a 13-year old boy, whose family Jackson had befriended.

Other songs on the HIStory album strike out at the sensationalized yellow journalism of the tabloids. Retaliating could also be defiance, which is a trait Einstein valued. He "esteemed the mind of the young child, granting it powerful intuitions about physics," scholars note. He placed the mind and spirit of the young child "on a pedestal," like other creators, including Jackson, who also studied the scientist. Einstein found satisfaction in childlike traits, such as curiosity and defiance of convention. (cite) Jackson believed in defiance, as well. Once when an interviewer asked how he came up with his ideas, he cited being "defiant" as a means of stoking his creativity.
Stravinsky anchored his music in basic elements of the medium, using primitive rhythms and harmonies that impressed him as a child. The artist, Picasso, cultivated a childlike personality. The fragmented forms in his art showed characteristics of young children, with the simplest of shapes and all aspects of the visual experience represented simultaneously. Like Einstein, Picasso "clowned for the media." He also had a quest for possessions, and a desire for total control, taken to be "infantile." In his book, Extraordinary Minds, Howard Gardner noted that Gandhi was very childish and cultivated the look of a young child.

The writer, T.S. Eliot was called "childlike, endearing" and considered the most repressed in his life, though not in his powerful work, The Wasteland. Eliot was childlike in that he "loved puzzles, produced bawdy doggerel, and verses for children." His appreciation for the novel and offbeat, fragmented nature of verse and its concern with unconscious and symbolic themes is in the same childlike universe as the artist Stravinsky and the scientist Einstein. Like Jackson, who was often called an "old soul," Eliot also seemed old when he was young. Eliot enjoyed the elder statesman role. Jackson saw himself as a father to the world's children, a hero, a benevolent king, and protector, according to the artist David Nordahl, with whom Jackson commissioned paintings for many years.

Martha Graham sought to remain forever young in her person and her work. "the art form she selected used the body for expression" and the elemental expressions she favored drew on the child's imagination, according to Gardner. The dancer, Twyla Tharp noted this "sense of innocence"also as the "final skill" of the dancer-"forever the child"-the dancer does not know that failure can hurt, that one can fail.

A Look At Suing The City For Personal Injury If You Trip On A ...

When it comes to a personal injury issue, an experienced legal team can help. ?Kathy Chittley-Young and her team at KCY at LAW, located at 920 Brant Street, Suite 8, Burlington, ON L7R 4J1, specialize in cases that involve personal injury. ?The firm can be reached at (905) 639-0999, but for now, please enjoy this piece of writing about personal injury.

Sidewalk maintenance has to be performed by the owner of the property that adjoins the sidewalk, and only in instances where such sidewalk is damaged due to trees planted at the roadside or some other reasons beyond the control of the house owner, will a city council have to get their agencies to fix the sidewalk.

Most states have laws in place which give the local entities immunity from any claims from a personal injury attorney for any tripping or slipping on sidewalks. ? If however there is no such statute in place, any person tripping on a sidewalk can sue the city through a personal injury attorney. People who own property have to keep sidewalks and any other part of their property that is used by the public in reasonably safe condition if they want to avoid claims from tripping or slipping by users. If they do find such situations arising, they?re duty bound to rope off the area, or post verbal warnings to acknowledge the likely danger of using the sidewalk.

When such injury claims are made, the injured party has to prove that the condition of the property is dangerous and can also cause a person to trip or slip, and also that the owner of the property had knowledge of the unsafe condition. Such injury claims made through a personal injury attorney can be for economic and non economic reasons and may even include future considerations like loss of earnings, disability etc. Non economic reasons can incorporate pain, suffering and trauma caused by tripping on that sidewalk. ?In cases where negligence can be attributed to deliberate inaction, the injured party can also request punitive damages, but this will likely require proving such reckless disregard for the safety of others by the owner concerned.

Most cities have agencies that regularly inspect sidewalks of private properties and others that are owned by the city. ?Accidents that happen on sidewalks that are part of the city?s property can lead to the city being liable if any one sues them for tripping over them. Most defects in sidewalks result from missing stones or those that are cracked and thus become uneven, which can then lead to people tripping over it. Any sudden difference in level of more than half an inch is recognized as a hazard that can cause someone to trip. An improper slope can even be considered a defect that a personal injury attorney may consider as negligence while making a claim on behalf of the injured party.

If a hazard that caused the trip was easily recognized, the city can dismiss your claims, even if you sue the city. Such injury claims can also be dismissed if the injuries have occurred during or for some time after a snow storm or other inclement weather.

If you have enjoyed this content, you can learn more about personal injury issues from KCY at LAW, a legal firm headed by attorney Kathy Chittley-Young. ?You can contact the firm, located at 920 Brant Street, Suite 8, Burlington, ON L7R 4J1, at (905) 639-0999. ?Also, if you like this piece of writing, then why not share it socially with your friends and family?

The Specialty Of Special Children - Education - EzineMark

?Today Gracie played in the playground; she fell down and got bruised like all the other kids. She came home at the end of the day, cranky, like any other kid, played with her baby doll, and finally hugged and kissed me, while I was in the kitchen. She could even walk to the sink to wash her chubby hands, all on her own today. Grace can make her daddy's heart melt, in a matter of seconds with her bright, sparkling, smile upon her beautiful little face. Less then a second, Grace is her dad's world and mine too. Infact she is our super hero. How blessed am I?.

This was an excerpt from Mrs. John?s diary. Though it may seem normal, Mrs. John?s 5 year old little daughter, is a special child that takes hours longer to walk, tie her shoe laces as compared to normal children. In a country like India, Children with special needs stand at an even greater disadvantage.

They are either hidden away at home, rejected by schools or generally be neglected, which makes it even harder for them to find employment when they grow up.? In most families disability is considered to cause serious financial constraints because, few entertain special children?s needs. Infact when a special child is born into an Indian family, special children are considered to be a result of the anger of gods, or ancestors, the embodiment of sin in the family or of sin itself, is widely prevalent.

Parents of these children feel guilty and sometimes take the blame for the impairment on themselves. Families, communities and the medical professionals often worsen this guilt by their attitude to the baby and to the parents, calling the child a 'vegetable', 'useless', or 'a burden'.

Inevitably the stigma and guilt results in the isolation or segregation of the child.Though a few NGO services do cater to their needs, most of them are time consuming, demand a lot of patience and repetitive. By providing all the needed services in a holistic manner as an Integrated Program, children with special needs are provided timely, affordable and quality services there by improving their lives and that of their families and the society at large.

Children with Special Needs are amongst the most marginalized sections of society in India. Over the last decade and a half, there has been a growing awareness and several significant achievements but however, a large number of these children still live in alienation and isolation. Added to this is the fact that most rehabilitation services are either unavailable or beyond the reach of families belonging to the lower strata of society. Due to the stigma and stereotyping the initial years of these special children are spent by families running from pillar to post trying to cure the child?s condition, right from specialist who promise cure to a quack who promises a miracle to happen on full moon days to a therapist who can provide quick results.

This eventually drains out the parents financial capabilities reconcile to the verdict by Doctors & other professionals that their Child is useless and leave the child unattended in a corner of the house. The fragmented rehabilitation system also means that parents are left to choose between medical, therapeutic or special education. But the beauty of a special child will always be special and that?s the promise of life.

Mark Sawyer: The Crisis of the African-American Intellectual: What's to Be Learned From the Cornel West v. Melissa Harris-Perry Debate

In 1967, Harold Cruse wrote the fabled book, The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual. In the book, Cruse mapped the unsettled space between intellectuals and an increasingly fragmented set of social movements. I argue here we are at such a place, as we have on one hand a pragmatic Obama administration under siege from right wing forces and on the other hand black intellectuals trying to articulate the voices of what are absent mass social movements. This creates a crisis that plays itself out in peculiar ways. The conflict between Professors Melissa Harris-Perry and Cornel West is one such area.

As academics and scholars, our job is to teach and develop scholarship that aids human kind. For African-American scholars we carry the additional burden of trying to provide a deeper understanding of the issues that confront the black community in the United States and sometimes beyond. Our task is to illuminate, to provide analysis and critique that elevates the discussion and provides the public of all races with a better understanding of issues and ideas for a way forward.

But we are ciphers. Unlike W.E.B. DuBois and even some of the intellectuals in the period that Cruse wrote about, black intellectuals are not leaders in the way we once might have claimed. With the access to the ballot, African Americans have elected city councilmen, mayors, senators and even a president. We have supported politicians of all races for ideological and strategic reason. And the African-American community no longer must rely on unelected artists, academics, athletes and entertainers to speak for us. This situation is at once liberating and scary. While we are rightfully angry to decry those who suggest American is post-racial or celebrities who avoid speaking out on issues, it is also liberating for non-elected black folk to not speak for us.

That is why the recent comments published in Diverse Issues in Higher Education about Professor Melissa Harris-Perry by Professor Cornel West so saddened me. West's reference to Melissa Harris-Perry as a "fraud" is bad but the use of the adjective "treacherous" invokes a gender dog whistle that harkens back to the concept sexually available black woman cozying up to the master. Boyce Watkins, in his attack on Harris-Perry, on his website doubles down on the Jezebel stereotype by accusing Harris-Perry of "whoring herself out." What could have been an interesting discussion about black politics in the Obama era, has degenerated into a series of ad hominem attacks. We might have had a debate a la the high minded engagement with Michael Dawson's essay on Black Politics published in a recent issue of the Boston Review. Instead, we have been treated to ever deepening ad hominem attacks. Academic versions of street level put downs.

However, within the back and forth between Harris-Perry, West and others is a deep structure in terms of assessing the Obama administration that must be understood. But first we need to understand how we got here.

In response to Cornel West's Truth Dig attack on Obama, Harris-Perry crafted her own scathing critique. That critique pointed out that much of what was discussed in the Truth Dig article involved perceived personal sleights by Obama and also included some fairly ridiculous questioning of the President's racial authenticity. Harris-Perry focused her analysis on these points, which went right up to and perhaps over the line of assailing West's character. To be fair, Harris-Perry only responded to West's statements, and West didn't offer a terribly coherent critique of POTUS, but for what it's worth it is clear that West took Harris-Perry's response personally. It is also the case that Harris-Perry focused on the weaker parts of Cornel West's argument rather than the areas of more legitimate concern. A better tact would have been to address the strongest aspects of West's argument and offered a critique of his best positions rather than his worst positions. What was obscured in all of this is a real substantive disagreement on how we should assess and engage the Obama administration. West and Harris-Perry are using very different metrics to address the Obama administration and we need to understand those metrics and what they mean.

Within the back and forth between Harris-Perry, West and others there lies deep structure in terms of assessing the Obama administration that must be understood. I posit there are essentially two sides to this debate and I think it is easy to caricature either side.
To characterize Melissa Harris-Perry and Obama supporters more generally they often assess the administration contextually. That is their analysis of the success or failure of the Obama administration is based on an analysis of the limits of American political institutions, our current economic situation and the political climate. Further, the metric used to measure the President's accomplishments is what other Presidents were able to accomplish in similar or other circumstances.

For analysts like Harris-Perry the unprecedented use of the filibuster, and a Republican party who are less loyal opposition and more like a drunk driver playing chicken on a two-lane highway, make for formidable obstacles for the President. They not only cite Republicans but the conservatism of the democratic coalition in the Senate. A coalition still recovering from Clinton's Democratic Leadership Council that spent over 25 years attempting to move the party and especially Senate Democrats rightward. These analysts see the compromises and deals as sausage making of an effective legislative agenda. This group is not without criticisms of the President. Some disagree with aspects of foreign policy etc. or have criticized framing failures, but generally see the President as attempting to bend the momentum of trends toward inequality that are almost 40 years in the making.

For critics like West, the context is not significant. They desire messianic leadership that is transformative in its articulation of progressive values. For them the President's compromises undermine progressive arguments and more progressive stances on a range of issues. Some just want to see results. The fact of black unemployment regardless of how long the trend has existed is a critique of President Obama in and of itself. These critics tend to ignore context a la West's appearance on the Ed Schulz show discussing health care. When West was confronted with the fact that there were not fifty votes in the Senate for a public option, West simply changed the subject. Or on the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act), critics tend to ignore the fact the bill passed with a veto proof majority. Ostensibly the President was supposed to hand his political opponents the weapon of having vetoed funding for the troops, in order to take a purely symbolic stand on an issue average Americans don't understand. In doing so the Bill would have gone into law without the signing statement that limits the scope of what are clearly unconstitutional provisions.

While I am not generally sympathetic to this view, it is important to understand its origins and its importance. Often these critics of the President cite the idea that the President should use the bully pulpit to advocate for progressive causes. They want the President to be a leader of progressive social movements, and to be fair, in his campaign the President rhetorically flirted with the idea that he would assume that role. These types are happiest when the President is talking tough but getting nothing done a la his proposed jobs bill. But how do we square the circle?

Folks like Melissa Harris-Perry tend to underplay the need for the President to sometimes better frame and articulate a progressive agenda and the West's and Smiley's of the world overestimate the degree to which the President can through persuasion enact a more progressive agenda. However, while both positions are important to understand they are not equivalent. A President's primary job given the nature of the crises we face is to get things done. The President is also not a dictator he can't pass immigration reform on his own, end black unemployment by fiat, or create a single payer system. Nor does the bully pulpit mean the same thing in the era of 24 hour cable news and blogs. Even the cacophony of this debate demonstrates how easy it is for sideshows to muddy the stage. Frequently when I hear left critics of the President say "the President should say," he often has said just that and often on the biggest stage. We should criticize him when he says or does things that undermine movement in those areas but we can't demand he do things that political institutions don't allow.

At the same time, we need voices focusing on issues like poverty, inequality, immigration reform, women's rights, human rights, mass incarceration and a host of other issues that get scant attention in the day to day of our current politics. The success of Occupy Wall Street in putting inequality on the national agenda helped push the President to articulate a more progressive populist position on taxes and spending. What that means is we need West's voice and we need it to speak out loudly about this issues. West is trying to speak for what should be an active vibrant and articulate set of black and multi-racial social movements. However, conflating concern for these issues with support or non support of the President is just wrong. The biggest offender of this has been Dr. Boyce Watkins. Watkins not withstanding his sexist claim Harris-Perry is "whoring herself out", in his video rant and blog posting he suggests that Harris-Perry and Obama supporters simply don't care about poor black people, mass incarceration and a host of other issues. He's just wrong. You cannot conflate pragmatism and realistic expectations with an ideological difference.

My broader point is we need movement voices to call attention to these issues and we also need realistic cogent and pragmatic analysis of the work the President and all of our leaders are actually doing. While at times these two spheres can come together, it is also important that both institutionally and analytically they remain separate. Social movement actors need to avoid capture by political parties and elected officials in order to have the freedom to articulate issues and make demands. But we also can't criticize a President of the United States for not being a social movement leader. We need Melissa Harris-Perry and we need Cornel West, what we don't need is ad hominem attacks that obscure the inevitable friction between vision and pragmatism, social movement and institutional politics. But most important is we need active Black grassroots social movements to show us as scholars the way. Until we such movements we will continue to have a Crisis of the African American Intellectual.

Examining The Use Of High Viz Clothes At Work | Pete Benevides ...

One of the challenges of living in the modern world is the necessity of having and holding a job. Because this needs puts workers in a vulnerable position in comparison to those who hire them, societies everywhere have acted to protect the labor force. In addition to reasonable working hours and conditions, personal protective equipment like Hi Viz clothing are required of companies.

There is a scientific approach to safety, beginning with a task analysis and getting corporate clothing, the purpose of which is to identify the steps required to perform the event, and then an analysis of the risks involved. In may warehouse areas the environment itself is problematic, with material handling equipment and pedestrians moving about at the same time. Well marked movement areas and the use of spotters helps, but reduced visibility for operators and distracted pedestrians complicate the situation.

The modern warehouse is a beehive of activity that lies at the heart of many company distribution processes; they are very busy places. In the rush for efficient movement of all the material stored within, material handling equipment is all over the place, and they do not drive like regular automobiles. When transporting heavy or large loads, the operator has to concentrate on that material as well as where he is going, so pedestrians have to make themselves visible.

Warehouse lighting is a perennial problem, as the upkeep and maintenance light fixtures and electrical wiring require lift devices and are therefore more complicated than just changing a bulb in an office. Inclement weather also decreases ambient luminescence and can do so rapidly. Making sure workers see and avoid is an ongoing challenge the requires vigilance and discipline for the good of all.

It is also essential that companies provide such personal protective equipment and ensure that it is worn properly and continuously. Sometimes workers remove protective equipment for comfort or convenience, which may be an indication that the gear provided is not optimal for the job. Matching the clothing to the job is more complicated than it might appear, as anticipating every task over the course of a shift is difficult.

Even selecting the optimum color and type of reflectivity is dependent on the environment. In addition to weather and lighting conditions, the primary background color will affect the visibility of protective material and to what degree reflectivity may be required. Test runs to match the material with the workplace are an essential part of selecting PPE.

In addition to reflectivity and color, , other considerations include fitness to purpose. If the garment creates a hazard because it is too loose and can snag on moving equipment, or is too tight and restricts movements, it can be a greater risk than help. It should also be right for the climate, water repellent when necessary, breathable in summer and warm in winter, because if it is too uncomfortable, it will not be worn.

A leading cause of workplace injury is that workers do not comply with safety policy and procedures. It is a management responsibility to provide PPE and accomplish training on the need and proper use, but workers have a part in the process as well. Contrary to what common sense might indicate, motivating people to be safe is not easy, but failing the task could mean that a worker was injured or killed because he neglected to don his Hi Viz clothing.

Visit Safety Factory to get Hi viz clothing ? an essential part of work safety. Regardless of the business type, wearhouse work will always require certain hi viz clothing

hp touchpad blog: Maximise Family Fun With An At Home Holiday!

The global recession has brought some real challenges for families across the UK. The credit crisis has resulted in a huge number of redundancies and many of us are working hard at 'tightening our belts'. With the summer holidays on the horizon, the Mediterranean sun may have already set for many of us.

Who Would Have Thought?

After spending years and years working, there is one lesson me and the remainder of the world has not learnt. What is it? Time management. Every single Sunday night before I go to work, I think, ok, this week I'm going to do this, this, this and this. Does it happen? Of course not! We end up getting to work, doing our thing and by the time we're done, the tiredness has crept/swamped/baffled us and we leave it to another day. Unfortunately, this is the world we currently live in and the only way out is to start introducing 34 hour days. I'm sure if we're nice enough the one above will keenly oblige and bless us with an extra 10 hours. Or we can take another option and do some serious time management work. Oh yes, and still be good of course!

So Tip 1: Try and get some rest on a Sunday night before work.

Rushing into the beginning of the week can have a serious impact on the remainder of the week. I call it the domino effect. Why? Because we go to bed at 12am, wake up at 6.30-7am or for the less unfortunate, earlier and we're already rushing. We miss out on doing several things that carry on to the next day and so on until Friday comes along and oops, I haven't done half the things I'm meant to.

Tip 2: Try and plan out your day with realistic goals. Instead of thinking you can go for a 5km run and get yourself ready for work in a 1 hour period, set yourself something achievable. In other words, get ready without going for the run and eat less, or, yes, I'm going to say it, park your car a fair distance from work and walk. If you happen to catch public transport, walk a fair distance instead and catch it from somewhere else.

My philosophy has always been, walk walk walk. If it takes me 30 minutes to get home by public transport, and then go for a run for another 30 minutes, why not walk home for an hour. Ok, this is not rational when you catch a bullet train to work or have to use a free way (in some countries walking on a free way is perfectly normal. I said normal, not safe) but I'm trying to help about 50% of the world?s population in this paragraph.

Tip 3: Start your work earlier! I am being a total hypocrite when I say this but oh well. I'm only trying to give advice that works! I'm sure that right now, at least one of you is sitting down, reading this article and thinking, okay okay, I?ll start after I'm done reading this. Of course, that's when you decide to go and warm up last nights left overs. That situation where we are sitting down, doing our work last minute at 3.00am in the morning and then we think, this is never going to happen again. Who are we kidding, it keeps on going. Until you break that cycle, it will happen again and again.

Tip 4: How many of you sit down on your desk, filled up with piles of paper, open up your bag to a number of folders and scrunched up papers. Or, the final one, store files on your computer with duplicate file names on your USB or any other portable storage you have. Then you want to get access to them but realise you forgot them at home, or on your USB. Yes, again, many of us. Well, get organized or organi's'ed as us Aussies prefer to spell it. I've been using an online program?https://www.mypdv.com?to store some of my work and I can have remote access to it as well. But for those who want to pretend you did your part of the work but a) 'forgot it at home', b)'I forgot it at my friends house last night', yes, I know you have a friend, c) I got so drunk on the weekend and lost my USB that had the work on it, then this program is not for you. Please only use it if you want to get organized. For all those who would like the sinful way out (can you feel the guilt yet?) Then don't bother using it.

To finish off what I'm saying, it's not hard to time manage and get organized. Well, who am I kidding, it's easier said than done and I'm sitting here on a Saturday afternoon still in bed thinking what I should get to eat. Although, it is Saturday and I've happily finished all my work. So, if you want to significantly improve your time management skills, the tips above will get you half way there. Doing them is the other half!

Ohio AG DeWine switches from Romney to Santorum

(AP) ? Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine switched his endorsement from Mitt Romney to Rick Santorum on Friday in a defection he said was driven by his belief the former Pennsylvania senator can win the Republican presidential race.

DeWine, a former senator who led John McCain's Ohio presidential campaign in 2008, made the announcement in the company of Santorum at the Statehouse. He said he once felt Santorum could not overcome Romney's financial advantage but has decided he was wrong.

DeWine had endorsed Romney in the Republican presidential race after his initial choice, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, withdrew.

The defection comes as a sting to Romney, though he still has some major names in Ohio Republican politics behind him heading into the March 6 primary. They include Sen. Rob Portman, Reps. Mike Turner and Jim Renacci, and the former senator and governor, George Voinovich.

Romney's camp tried to wave off the development.

"Nothing has changed," insisted John Sununu, a Romney adviser and former New Hampshire governor. "Attorneys general don't have that much of an organization."

He attributed the switch to an ad a pro-Romney group ran criticizing Santorum's vote in the Senate to give voting rights to felons once they complete their sentences or parole. DeWine also had cast a vote in favor of such rights.

"Mike DeWine was upset that issue was raised by the super PAC," Sununu said.

Ohio Democrats, through their spokesman Seth Bringman, issued a terse statement in response to DeWine's decision: "As is true for countless Ohioans, the more Mike DeWine learned about Mitt Romney, the less he liked."

DeWine successfully pushed for Ohio to join 25 other states in a lawsuit to block the new federal health care overhaul. The lawsuit claims the law violates people's rights by forcing them to buy health insurance.

He served four terms in the House and two terms in the Senate before losing his re-election bid to Sherrod Brown in 2006. He won a close election for state attorney general in 2010.

A Quinnipiac University poll out last week found Santorum edging ahead of Romney in the political battleground state, but with half the state's GOP voters indicating they may yet change their minds. No Republican nominee has reached the White House without winning Ohio.

Coming off a sweep in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri last week, Santorum had trailed far behind Romney in Ohio just a month ago.

Republican Gov. John Kasich doesn't intend to endorse any of the candidates. Kasich initially favored former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour for the presidency. After Barbour decided not to pursue the nomination, Kasich was among those who urged New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to enter the race. He didn't.

Sununu and Rep. Mike Turner, another Romney backer, took part in a conference call aimed at countering Santorum's latest piece of good news. Turner said Santorum, who has lacked money and organization for much of the race, won't get on the ballot in all states and that raises questions about his "basic level of competence."

[OOC] The World of Leu Chrysallia

The General Overview

The world of Leu Chrysallia is something of a bizarre world in a broad sense-little of it is truly defined beyond some basic concepts of it. The world as a whole is a montage of fantasy and odd levels of technology. The levels of technology that exist in the world vary, greatly. There is a high enough level of technology to creat a functioning cyborg, but the problem is that this technology is not completely understood, while it is of a higher level than what exists here, there are few who even know of its existence yet. And those who even do don't understand how it functions. So it would be more hush-hush and secret then availible to the general population. The ability to create machines and cyborgs exist, but it wouldn't be entirely understood yet.

To the rest of the world, the level of tech that exists is very different from this though, while there is electricity, how people live varies by location and economic class. The rich have better homes and more access to better ways of living, so they can afford things like radio and such, which would be the prime way of receiving news and at-home entertainment at this point in time, so no television. But . . . since the poor makes up the majority of the population, radio and such is not a very widespread aspect of life yet, some people live in the dark, and transportation is more horse and carriage than anything else. There are no things like cell phones, there are landline phones for those who can afford it, but far and few of those.

Magic is still very much a real thing, since most of the world lives in rather terrible conditions, many people still use spells and things like alchemy as a part of daily living. Swords and such are pretty common, and there are guns, but they are equal to stuff you would find in the mid-1800's. People's use of either depends entirely upon personal preference.

Most people aren't aware of the advanced tech that exists yet, just a few people, like those who rule over countries and such.

As for how people live, there are villages and larger cities, but those cities are more like what you find in the heyday of the Industrial Revolution at best, the rich live in good conditions while the majority of the city suffers. It's common, and the world outside of most cities is pretty scary, conditions are going downhill fast and everything is degrading.

The Races of Leu Chrysallia

There is a variety of peoples who exist in the world, far more than simple humans. There are many sentient races, and it is not uncommon for them to intermingle, yet at the same time it is also very common that the live apart from one another, existing separately.

Creatures of magic exist as well the many races which exist in this world are; humans, light elves, dark elves, dwarves, orcs, green goblins, black goblins, vampires, shapeshifters, wizards, witches, salamanders, undines, sylphs, gnomes, merpeople, fae, and orcs.

Also, a number of people who blur the lines between the fullblooded races, having been born to parents of different bloods. Commonly, they are refered to as 'Halflings.' There are some formal titles for Halfling races though when they are rather common, such as 'Dhampir' because it is not at all unusual to meet a person who bears the blood of a vampire and the blood of another humanoid race in their veins.

The Goddess Sevda

The legends and mythos surrounding the Goddess Sevda run deep into the world and into all cultures. The Goddess was said to have created all life, all of the races and shared with them her blessings and power at the beginning of the world. Yet, the imperfections of mortals would be her undoing, as the jealousy sparked in their hearts for the Goddess' attention weakened Sevda until she could no longer maintain the world as it was, as an Eden. To sustain herself and the world at all, she was said to enter a state of sleep, of which she would one day awaken from.

How she would awaken or when was never told, yet there was a firm belief in people that their beloved mother would rouse someday soon and restore the world to what it once was. . . . In recent times though, belief in the Goddess and this story has greatly waned, it is hard to believe in a benevolent figure in a world where it is hard to get by and the enviroment itself seems to on the verge of death.

Other

Okay, this is just the general layout for everything. As you can see, the details on the world are rather loose and lacking in detail. That is purposeful, I want the creation of Leu Chrysallia that follows to be an effort put forth by everyone. Any thoughts or ideas are welcome. ^^

Swiss craft janitor satellites to grab space junk

The tidy Swiss want to clean up space.

Swiss scientists said Wednesday they plan to launch a "janitor satellite" specially designed to get rid of orbiting debris known as space junk.

The 10-million-franc ($11-million) satellite called CleanSpace One ? the prototype for a family of such satellites ? is being built by the Swiss Space Center at the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology in Lausanne, or EPFL.

EPFL said Wednesday its launch would come within three to five years and its first tasks are to grab two Swiss satellites launched in 2009 and 2010.

The U.S. space agency NASA says over 500,000 pieces of spent rocket stages, broken satellites and other debris are being tracked as they orbit Earth.

The debris travels at speeds approaching 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour), fast enough to destroy or inflict costly and time-draining damage on a satellite or spacecraft. Collisions, in turn, generate more fragments floating in space.

"It has become essential to be aware of the existence of this debris and the risks that are run by its proliferation," said Claude Nicollier, an astronaut and EPFL professor.

Building the satellite means developing new technology to address three big problems, scientists say.

The first hurdle has to do with trajectory: The satellite has to be able to adjust its path to match that of its target. EPFL said its labs are looking into a new ultra-compact motor that can do this.

Next, the satellite has to be grab hold of and stabilize the debris at high speeds. Scientists are studying how plants and animals grip things as a model for what would be used.

And, finally, CleanSpace One has to be able to take the debris, or unwanted satellites, back into Earth's atmosphere, where they will burn on re-entry.

Swiss Space Center's director, Volker Gass, said it hopes to someday "offer and sell a whole family of ready-made systems, designed as sustainably as possible, that are able to de-orbit several different kinds of satellites."

Decision time for researchers of deadly bird flu

LONDON/GENEVA | Wed Feb 15, 2012 2:23pm EST

LONDON/GENEVA (Reuters) - When 22 bird flu experts meet at the World Health Organization this week, they will be tasked with deciding just how far scientists should go in creating lethal mutant viruses in the name of research.

The hurriedly assembled meeting is designed to try to settle an unprecedented row over a call to ban publication of two scientific studies which detail how to mutate H5N1 bird flu viruses into a form that could cause a deadly human pandemic.

But experts say whatever the outcome, no amount of censorship, global regulation or shutting down of research projects could stop rogue scientists getting the tools to create and release a pandemic H5N1 virus if they were intent on evil.

"It doesn't matter how much you restrict scientists from doing good, bad people can still do bad things," said Wendy Barclay, an expert in flu virology at Imperial College London.

The WHO called the meeting, for February 16 and 17 in Geneva, to work out how to break a deadlock between scientists who have studied the mutations needed to make H5N1 transmit between mammals and U.S. biosecurity chiefs who want their work censored or "redacted" before it goes into scientific journals.

Since the two research teams, one in the Netherlands and one in the United States, have found that just a small number of mutations would allow H5N1 to spread like ordinary flu between mammals - and remain just as deadly as it is now - the meeting is likely to be tense and highly secretive. WHO officials repeatedly stress it will be a "closed door" event.

DEEP CONCERN

The United Nations health body has said it is "deeply concerned about the potential negative consequences" of work by the two leading flu research teams who in December said they had found ways to make H5N1 into a easily transmissible form capable of causing lethal human pandemics.

Flu researchers from around the world - more than 30 teams in all - declared a 60-day moratorium starting on January 20 on "any research involving highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 viruses" that produce easily contagious forms of the virus.

The WHO has invited 22 people to this week's meeting, including the researchers who carried out the work, editors of the two journals, Science and Nature, who were asked to hold publication, and representatives from the U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) which asked for the papers to be censored.

Keiji Fukuda, the WHO's assistant director-general for health security and environment, who will chair the meeting, says he would like to secure agreement on whether the studies should be published, in full or part, and who should have access to them.

The scientific know-how is seen as vital for scientists to be able to develop vaccines, diagnostic tests and anti-viral drugs that could be deployed in the event of an H5N1 pandemic.

"It is important that research on these viruses should continue," Fukuda told Reuters. "They do pose a risk. There's a lot of things we don't know about them. The question is not really should we continue to do research ... but under what conditions can we do it so we don't unnecessarily create fears and risks."

Michael Osterholm, policy director at the Minnesota Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance and an NSABB member, has limited hope for what one meeting can achieve.

"Nothing will be solved in one meeting," he said. "This is a complicated issue that requires a great deal of international input. It is not a simple yes or no ... We have no margin for error here."

The H5N1 virus, first detected in Hong Kong in 1997, remains entrenched among poultry in many countries, mainly in Asia, but so far remains hard for humans to catch. It is known to have infected nearly 700 people worldwide since 2003, killing half of them, a far higher fatality rate than the new H1N1 flu virus, which originated in swine and caused a human influenza pandemic in 2009/2010.

Ron Fouchier, the scientist leading the Dutch team that gave H5N1 various genetic mutations and made it transmissible in mammals, argues the research must be published to help public health officials better prepare for a scenario where the virus could mutate and become more deadly, spreading from person to person via coughs and sneezes.

He has also said other research teams around the world are close to the same findings, some of them inadvertently, and should be warned in advance how the virus could become airborne.

In the short term, most scientists agree the moratorium is "a good gesture," as flu expert and former WHO health security adviser David Heymann describes it, one that offers the research community space to think.

SUPER STRAINS

But can it, or should it, go on forever?

Heymann, Barclay and many other scientists argue that stopping this type of research into flu viruses and other potentially lethal pathogens would set a dangerous precedent.

Although adding and deleting genes can create super-strains that put the entire world at risk, Heymann said, such work is also vital to developing tools such as effective vaccines and diagnostic tests which are needed quickly if a pandemic hits.

Preventing this research would also prevent legitimate and well-intentioned researchers from using all possible scientific options to prepare for naturally occurring, or deliberately caused, outbreaks.

John Edmunds, who heads the department of infectious disease epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, describes studies on genetic mutations of H5N1 as "very, very important work" that should not be stopped.

"This flu strain has the potential to cause such enormous damage, and it's important to know how far away we are from a horrible event like that," he said. "It appears we're not that far off it. That doesn't mean it's inevitably going to happen, but it makes it more important that we're vigilant."

Heymann, who now leads the Centre on Global Health Security at the Chatham House think-tank in London, says the best possible outcome would be a globally agreed "best practices framework on how you conduct this research and how you provide the information to others."

"It's also crucial to get understanding that even if you don't provide this research information, there are ways that rogue scientists can get it if they want to," he said.
