Court ruling offers inmates rare chance at freedom

(AP) ? The Supreme Court ruling that banned states from imposing mandatory life sentences on juveniles offers an unexpected chance at freedom to more than 2,000 inmates who had almost no hope they would ever get out.

In more than two dozen states, lawyers can now ask for new sentences. And judges will have discretion to look beyond the crime at other factors such as a prisoner's age at the time of the offense, the person's background and perhaps evidence that an inmate has changed while incarcerated.

"The sentence may still be the same," said Lawrence Wojcik, a Chicago lawyer who co-chairs the juvenile justice committee of the American Bar Association. "But even a sentence with a chance for parole gives hope."

Virtually all of the sentences in question are for murder. When Henry Hill was an illiterate 16-year-old, he was linked to a killing at a park in Saginaw County and convicted of aiding and abetting murder.

Hill had a gun, but he was never accused of firing the fatal shot. Nonetheless, the sentence was automatic: life without parole. He's spent the last 32 years in Michigan prisons.

"I was a 16-year-old with a mentality of a 9-year-old. I didn't understand what life without parole even meant," Hill, now 48, said Tuesday in a phone interview.

He heard about the Supreme Court decision while watching TV news in his cell.

"I got up hollering and rejoicing and praising God," said Hill, who would like to renovate homes and be a mentor to children if he's released. "The last three or four years, they always put young guys in with me."

The ruling also alarmed families of crime victims. Jessica Cooper, prosecutor in Oakland County, Mich., said her office has been taking calls from "distressed" relatives.

"Now they're going to start all over," Cooper said. "It's going to take years."

The Michigan Corrections Department said 364 inmates are serving mandatory life sentences for crimes they committed before turning 18. The prisoners now range in age from 16 to 67.

In Monday's 5-4 decision, the high court said life without parole for juveniles violates the Constitution's ban against cruel and unusual punishment. More than 2,000 people are in U.S. prisons under such a sentence, according to facts agreed on by attorneys for both sides of the case.

It's possible that some inmates will win immediate release. Judges could also impose new sentences carrying a specific number of years and a parole review. Some inmates could still be kept locked up for life.

"Judges have options," said Deborah LaBelle, a lawyer in Ann Arbor, Mich. "The Supreme Court said to look at juveniles individually: their age, family background, peer pressures, home environments."

LaBelle said she took a phone call from 34-year-old inmate Kevin Boyd, who was 16 when his mother killed his father. Boyd had given her the keys to his father's apartment, was aware of her threats and was convicted of murder.

After hearing of the court's decision, Boyd told LaBelle that he slept "with hope on my pillow for the first time in 15 years."

Back in 1996, Saulo Montalvo was a 16-year-old getaway driver in a fatal store robbery in Grand Rapids. He never stepped into the store but was convicted of murder and sent away for life.

"My mom and dad had gotten divorced, and I thought I had something to do with it," he said of his teen years. "I placed this burden on myself and began to act out. I gravitated toward people who were into minor crimes, drinking and smoking marijuana, and sought their acceptance. ... I was so broken by what I had done."

He said the victim's family has long forgiven him. And if released, Montalvo said, he could "be a benefit to the society I left behind."

The judge who sentenced him, Dennis Kolenda, didn't like the punishment but had to follow the law.

"A community that's got a soul has to recognize children are different, and we need to treat them as different," said Kolenda, who is now retired. "Some are incredibly dangerous, but we never know with kids how they're going to develop."

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, who supported the state's life without parole law for juveniles, said crime victims won't be forgotten during the next round of court hearings.

"Every case has its unique set of facts," Schuette said. "We're going to make sure the truth is accurate."

Anderson Silva tells of plans to break Chael Sonnen?s face

Through the scads of trash talk Chael Sonnen has spewed since his last bout with Anderson Silva, the UFC middleweight champ has stayed mostly silent. Sure, he'd answer back from time to time, but for the most part, Silva let Sonnen do the heavy lifting in the trash talk department.

That ended Monday when Silva erupted during the UFC 148 media conference call.

"First of all, Chael is a criminal," Silva said through Ed Soares, his manager who often serves as his interpreter. "He's been convicted of crimes. He doesn't deserve to be inside the Octagon. And when the time comes and the time is right, I'm going to break his face and break every one of his teeth in his mouth."

Silva is referring to Sonnen's guilty plea in a mortgage fraud case that happened just months after Silva beat Sonnen with a fifth-round submission at UFC 117.

It wasn't the end of Silva's verbal beatdown of Sonnen.

"I'm going to beat Chael like he's never been beaten before. The joke is over. There's no more talking. I know he's on the line listening, and the game is over. I'm going to beat his [expletive] out of the UFC. He's never going to want to fight again after I'm done with him."

Halfway through the call, Silva disappeared. With his opponent gone, Sonnen hung up, too. UFC president Dana White ended the call, and then tweeted, "7 years in the UFC and I've never heard Anderson talk like this before!!!"

There is only one plausible reason for this Anderson to have shown up. The real Anderson has an evil twin named Andreson. Anderson turns to Andreson when he wants to avoid conference calls, and tells him to let loose. Andreson read through everything Sonnen has said about his twin brother, and let it out. Then, at UFC 148, both men will show up at the fight just to confuse Sonnen.

Or maybe, just maybe, Silva got sick of holding it. Two weeks before the fight, he's letting it out, which is an interesting sign of things to come on July 7.

Should I Rent or Buy a Home? | Real Estate Industry News

By Dennis Norman, on June 25th, 2012

dennis-norman-st-louis-realtor-Lately the $64 question for many people is whether to rent or buy a home.? I think by now everyone knows that, as a result of the collapse in home prices and dirt-cheap interest rates, buying a home is now more affordable than ever, but for a lot of people there are still doubts or concerns that? need to be addressed before making the decision whether or not to buy.? Many of these issues stem around financing including; how much down payment will be necessary, what can I afford, etc.? The American?s Banker Association (ABA)came out with five questions every potential buyer should ask when deciding to buy or rent a home that, along with the helpful online calculators they offer, I think may be very helpful:

Five questions every potential buyer should ask when deciding whether to rent or buy a home:

1.??How much can you afford to put down? Can you afford the monthly payment?
A mortgage down payment of 5 to 20 percent of the selling price is typical, but can vary depending on the situation. The size of the down payment will impact the monthly cost. Assess your financial health, determine how large of a down payment you can afford and consider if you can then afford the monthly cost.

2. What other debt do you have?
Consider all of your current and expected financial obligations and ensure you are able to make all the payments. Aim to keep total rent or mortgage payments plus other credit obligations fewer than 35 to 40 percent of your monthly income. If you can?t keep payments below that, you may be better off renting for a while or searching for a more affordable home.

3. What is my credit score? Can I qualify for a good interest rate?
A high credit score indicates strong creditworthiness, which qualifies you for better interest rates on a mortgage. Maxing out your credit lines and paying bills late will lower your credit score, and the impact of a credit score on interest rates can be significant. For instance, a borrower with a score of 760 could pay nearly 2 percentage points less in interest than someone with a score of 620. That equates to over $3,000 less in mortgage payments each year. If your credit score is low, you may want to delay buying a home and take steps to raise your score. Learn how to improve your credit at www.myfico.com.

4.? How much will taxes, monthly maintenance or other fees cost?
Owning a home means you will have to pay real estate taxes and other costs like insurance and maintenance. However, owning a home can bring tax savings at the end of the year. Remember to factor in these costs and incentives. Renters have neither these costs, nor tax advantages.

5.? How many years will I stay here??
Generally, the longer you plan to live someplace, the more it makes sense to buy. Over time, you can build equity in your house where renters do not. Yet, renters have greater flexibility to move as they don?t have to worry about finding new tenants.

Here is another way to look at your options:

Advantages Disadvantages
Property can build equity Responsible for maintenance
Buy

?

?

Sense of stability and security Must pay property taxes
Freedom to change d?cor May not sell quickly
Tax advantages Could lose value
Minimal maintenance cost Can?t build equity
Rent

?

?

Easier to move No tax benefits
Good for short-term Usually can?t change d?cor
No down payment Possible rent increases

Islamist Morsi named Egypt's president

CAIRO (AP) ? Islamist Mohammed Morsi was declared the winner Sunday in Egypt's first free presidential election in history, closing the tumultuous first phase of a democratic transition and opening a new struggle with the still-dominant military rulers who recently stripped the presidency of most of its powers.

In Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the uprising that ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak, joyous Morsi supporters wept and kneeled on the ground in prayer as soon as they heard the outcome announced live television. They danced, set off fireworks and released doves in the air with Morsi's picture attached in celebrations not seen in the square since Mubarak was forced out on Feb. 11, 2011.

Many are looking now to see whether Morsi will try to take on the military and wrestle back the powers they took from his office just one week ago. Thousands vowed to remain in Tahrir to demand that the ruling generals reverse their decision.

"I pledge to be a president who serves his people and works for them," Morsi said on his official web page. "I will not betray God in defending your rights and the rights of this nation." He was scheduled to address the nation Sunday night in his first speech after being declared president.

The White House congratulated Morsi and urged him to advance national unity as he forms a new government. White House press secretary Jay Carney said Morsi's victory is a milestone in Egypt's transition to democracy after decades of authoritarian rule under Mubarak. The Obama administration had expressed no public preference in the presidential race.

Left on the sidelines of the political drama are the liberal and secular youth groups that drove the uprising against Mubarak, left to wonder whether Egypt has taken a step towards becoming an Islamist state. Some grudgingly supported Morsi in the face of Ahmed Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister, while others boycotted the vote.

Morsi will now have to reassure them that he represents the whole country, not just Islamists, and will face enormous challenges after security and the economy badly deteriorated in the transition period.

Pro-democracy leader Mohammed ElBaradei urged unity after the results were announced.

"It is time we work all as Egyptians as part of a national consensus to build Egypt that is based on freedom and social justice," he wrote on his Twitter account.

The elections left the nation deeply polarized with one side backing Shafiq, who promised to provide stability and prevent Egypt from becoming a theocracy. Because of his military career, many saw him as the military's preferred candidate.

In the other camp are those eager for democratic change and backers of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood who were persecuted, jailed and banned under Mubarak but now find themselves one of the two most powerful groups in Egypt.

The other power center is the ruling military council that took power after the uprising and is headed by Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years.

Just one week ago, at the moment polls were closing in the presidential runoff, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued constitutional amendments that stripped the president's office of most of its major powers. The ruling generals made themselves the final arbiters over the most pressing issues still complicating the transition? such as writing the constitution, legislating, passing the state budget? and granted military police broad powers to detain civilians.

"I am happy the Brotherhood won because now the revolution will continue on the street against both of them, the Brotherhood and the SCAF," said Lobna Darwish, an activist who has boycotted the elections.

Also, a few days before that constitutional declaration, a court dissolved the freely elected parliament, which is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, leaving the military now in charge of legislating.

Brotherhood members and experts said the results were used a bargaining chip between the generals and the Brotherhood over the parameters of what appears to be a new power-sharing agreement. The country's new constitution is not written and the authorities of the president are not clear.

This is the first time modern Egypt will be headed by an Islamist and by a freely elected civilian. The country's last four presidents over the past six decades have all came from the ranks of the military.

"Congratulations because this means the end of the Mubarak state," said Shady el-Ghazali Harb, a prominent activist who was among the leaders of the protests in January and February last year.

The results of the elections were delayed for four days amid accusations of manipulation and foul play by both sides, raising political tensions in Egypt to a fever pitch.

The delay plunged the country into nerve-wrecking anticipation and pushed tensions to a fever pitch. Parallel mass rallies by Shafiq and Morsi supporters were held in different parts of Cairo and cut-throat media attacks by supporters of both swarmed TV shows. In the hours before the announcement of the winner, the fear of new violence was palpable.

Heavy security was deployed around the country, especially outside state institutions, in anticipation of possible violence. Workers were sent home early from jobs, jewelry stores closed for fear of looting and many were stocking up on food and forming long lines at cash machines in case new troubles began.

Morsi, the 60-year old U.S.-trained engineer, narrowly defeated Shafiq with 51.7 percent of the vote versus 48.3, by a margin of only 800,000 votes, the election commission said. Turnout was 51 percent.

Farouk Sultan, the head of the commission, described the elections as "an important phase in the end of building our nascent democratic experience."

Sultan went to pains to explain the more than 400 complaints presented by the two candidates challenging counting procedures and alleging attempts of rigging. It appeared to be an attempt to discredit claims that the election commission was biased in favor of Shafiq, the candidate perceived as backed by the military rulers.

The country is deeply divided between supporters of the Brotherhood, liberals and leftists who also decided to back them as a way to stand up to the military, and other secular forces that fear the domination of the Brotherhood, and grew critical of it in the past year. The small margin of victory for Morsi also sets him for a strong opposition from supporters of Shafiq, viewed as a representative of the old regime.

Naguib Sawiris, a Coptic Christian business tycoon who joined a liberal bloc in voicing opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood a day before the results were announced, said he expects the new president to send a reassuring message to Egypt's Christian minority who represent around 10 percent of the population of 85 million.

"There are fears of imposing an Islamic state ... where Christians don't have same rights," Sawiris told the private TV station CBC. Morsi "is required to prove the opposite. ... We don't want speeches or promises but in the coming period, it is about taking action. ... He was not our choice but we are accepting it is a democratic choice."

Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist presidential candidate who came in a surprising third place in the first round of elections, asked Morsi to live up to his pledges to form a national coalition government and appoint presidential aides from different groups "that express the largest national consensus."

Khaled Abdel-Hamid, a leading leftist politician, said Morsi must fight to get his powers back or he will lose any popular support he may have garnered.

"If he fights to get his power back, we will support him. But if he doesn't fight back, then he is settling for siding with the military," he said.

Last rescued climber leaves Mount Rainier

(AP) ? The last of four Waco, Texas, climbers rescued on Mount Rainier in an effort that cost a ranger his life walked down off the Washington peak on Friday while blizzard conditions high on the mountain delayed efforts to retrieve the body.

The final climber, Stacy Wren, descended the mountain with Mount Rainier National Park rangers and was whisked away by car Friday evening. Three other climbers were plucked off the mountain by helicopter Thursday after the group fell and two of them ended up in a crevasse.

Eight other rangers trying to retrieve the body of climbing ranger Nick Hall, 33, from the 10,000-foot level of the 14-411-foot mountain were pinned down in a ground blizzard. They planned to spend the night at Camp Schurman at the 9,500-foot level and hope for a weather window on Saturday, park spokeswoman Fawn Bauer said.

Hall slid more than 3,000 feet to his death as he was helping evacuate the Texas climbers.

His family both grieved and celebrated his life Friday.

Hall, a four-year veteran of the park's climbing program, came from a family of EMTs who aided soldiers in Iraq and car crash victims in his small hometown of Patten, Maine. He was not married and had no children.

His father, Carter Hall, recalled his son as a loner when he was a child, but flourished in high school through a shared love of the wilderness.

"For good and bad, it was my influence of the outdoors," Hall told The Associated Press in a call from his Maine home, his voice breaking.

A Chinook helicopter from Joint Base Lewis-McChord removed three of the four climbers and rangers stayed on the mountain Thursday night with Wren.

The Texas climbers had reached the summit and were on their way down, roped together, when two women fell into a crevasse on Emmons Glacier. Two men were able to stop the group, and one called for help by cellphone.

Rangers and the helicopter responded to the site at the 13,700-foot level. A helicopter airlifted the three to Madigan Army Medical Center at the military base near Tacoma, where they were hospitalized in fair condition Friday, said spokesman Jay Ebbeson.

The climbers were bruised with possible broken bones, park spokesman Kevin Bacher said earlier.

Park spokeswoman Patti Wold identified the climbers as Stuart Smith, Noelle Smith, Ross Vandyke and Wren.

Hall had helped put three climbers into the helicopter when he fell. The park is investigating exactly how he fell, Bacher said.

"We don't want what happened to Nick to happen again," he said. "There's no urgency today; nobody's life is at risk today. Let's take it slow and make sure nobody else is hurt."

"We're a very small team and particularly the climbing team ? basically 15 people under the climbing foreman," said Bacher, who also is a ranger. "And they work very close together and train close together and depend on each other for their lives and become very close."

The last time a climbing ranger was killed was 1995, when two rangers died after falling 1,200 feet during a glacier rescue.

Hall's family said they were proud of his involvement in mountain rescues, and hoped that his death will draw attention to the profession's dangers.

Hall's father is a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Patten, and his older brother, Aaron, served in the National Guard as an EMT in Iraq. Aaron Hall celebrated his birthday on the day his brother died on the mountain.

Nick Hall had worked as an avalanche forecaster at Yellowstone National Park and as an emergency medical responder for the ski patrol at Washington's Stevens Pass Ski Area, his father said.

When he spoke to him about risks, Carter Hall said, his son responded that dying by heart attack "was also a risk in life."

Hall was the second Mount Rainier National Park ranger to die this year. Margaret Anderson was fatally shot on New Year's Day as she tried to stop a suspect in a Seattle shooting who drove through a tire-chain checkpoint. Benjamin Colton Barnes, 24, was found dead the next day in the snow.

Rescuers are still looking for four other people ? two climbers and two campers ? who disappeared on the mountain in January. "We're keeping our eyes out for them as the snow melts out," Bacher said.

About 10,000 climbers attempt to reach the summit of the volcano about 85 miles southeast of Seattle each year and about half make it, he said.

Scientific Arabian: Revolutions Then and Now

al-Jazari's Clock/Wikimedia Commons/Al-Jazari

al-Jazari's Clock/Wikimedia Commons/Al-Jazari

Walking through streets of Cairo, I?ve rarely heard talk of the unchecked pollution coughed from vehicles exhaust pipes, or of speculation of how many homes could be powered if only the vast deserts surrounding the city planted with solar farms, or of aspirations of sending the first Egyptian to space. No, the primary topics of conversation in the ubiquitous taxi cabs, hookah shops, and the neo-classically styled salons of private homes hasn?t changed in the thirty years I?ve been visiting my birth country ? politics, religion and the next meal. To hear talk of science, one needs to press ear to stone.

Not any stone will do. The rock must be old, hewn from millennia-old quarries to lay the foundation of institutes like Baghdad?s House of Wisdom and Cairo?s House of Knowledge, cornerstones of a golden age of Arab civilization spanning four centuries and reaching from Spain to Persia. If these stones could talk, they?d speak of revolution ? not the one sweeping through the Middle East today ? but of an intellectual revolution seeded by Greek knowledge and watered by a thirst for an empirical understanding of the world God (in the creationist view of the time) created.

Perhaps the stones would speak of engineers like al-Jazari, who pioneered the camshaft and practical application of automata, or of ibn Sina (Avicenna to the West), whose masterpiece laid the foundation of modern medicine. If we use our eyes and not our ears, perhaps we?d catch a glimpse of ibn al-Haytham, the father of optics and pioneer of the modern scientific method.

The spirit of the pursuit of knowledge would flee the Arab world, escaping the destruction of Baghdad?s House of Wisdom at the hands of Mongol invaders, but it would survive in the West. Just as Greek knowledge provided the foundation of an Arab scientific revolution, so too would Arab knowledge transferred to Europe lay the groundwork for the Renaissance in which the language of Arab science ? al-jebr, kimiya, al-khwarizmi ? would become Latinized to algebra, chemistry, and algorithm.

ibn Sina/Wikimedia Commons

ibn Sina/Wikimedia Commons

Today, many critics of Arab society rightfully ask, ?what have you done for me lately?? Where are the polymaths, the inventors, the free thinkers of the Arab world? Decades of occupation followed by stifling dictatorships drove many scientists and engineers (including my own father) to Western institutions where they would have the resources to pursue their research. Now it is the Arabic that borrows from English to describe technological advances such as the radio, television, and computers.

There are signs that scientific revolution is following on the heels of political change, the millennia-long dark age is lifting, and the ?baton of enlightenment? is being shared, if not passed, to the Arab world. In Egypt, Dr. Ahmed Zewail?s vision of a science city in Egypt is being realized after over a decade of stagnation, and in Saudi Arabia, an oil-rich monarch is once again investing in science in the tradition of Caliphates of the Arab Golden Age. In the series, ?Scientific Arabian,? we?ll take a closer look at the reemergence of science in the Arab world, and the influence the West and the Arab Spring are having upon it.

(AP) ? The number of people seeking U.S. unemployment benefits dipped last week but not by enough to signal a better month of hiring in June.

Weekly applications for unemployment aid declined by 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 387,000, the Labor Department said. That's down from an upwardly revised 389,000.

A more telling sign of the trend in unemployment benefit applications is the four-week average, which smooths week-to-week fluctuations. That rose for by 3,500 to 386,250, the highest level since December.

"After a fairly substantial period of constantly lower jobless claims, a new, more unwelcome trend higher has taken hold," said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at BTIG LLC, in an email. "A meaningful pickup in monthly job additions looks unlikely."

Applications are a measure of the pace of layoffs. They have been edging up in recent weeks after falling steadily over the fall and winter. In the past six weeks, applications have increased nearly 5 percent. When applications fall below 375,000, it generally suggests hiring is strong enough to reduce the unemployment rate.

Hiring slowed sharply in April and May, raising concerns about the strength of the recovery. Employers have added an average of only 73,000 jobs per month in April and May. That's much lower than the average of 226,000 added in the first three months of this year.

The number of people receiving unemployment benefits fell slightly. A total of 5.8 million people received benefits in the week ended June 2, the latest data available. That's about 1,000 fewer than the previous week.

The Federal Reserve acknowledged the sluggish hiring on Wednesday when it said it will extend a program intended to drive down long-term U.S. interest rates. The goal of the program is to encourage more borrowing and spending, which boosts growth and could lead to more job creation.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Fed was prepared to take further steps, particularly if hiring doesn't pick up soon.

The Fed also sharply cut its forecast for growth this year. At best, it says the economy will grow no more than 2.4 percent for the year. And the Fed warned that growth could be as low as 1.9 percent ? matching the dismal first-quarter annual pace.

The unemployment rate won't fall much further from its current level of 8.2 percent, the Fed said. At best, it forecasts that it will drop to 8.0 percent.

Faster job creation is crucial in order to accelerate growth. More jobs mean more income for consumers, which may lead to higher spending. Consumer spending fuels about 70 percent of the economy.

But several recent economic reports have pointed to sluggish growth. Employers posted sharply fewer job openings in April compared to the previous month, the government said Tuesday.

With job growth weak, consumers have pulled back on spending. Retail sales have fallen for the past two months, although part of the weakness was due to a sharp decline in gas prices.

Businesses are also less confident about the economy's health. They are placing fewer orders at factories, which has slowed manufacturing output. A measure of companies' investment spending has dropped for two straight months.

Waze unveils version 3.2, with waypoints, voice control, and real-time gas pricing

Waze

Waze has taken the wraps off the latest version of their über-popular social navigation app, and there's some pretty cool new features thrown into the mix. For starters, you can now find the things you're looking for along the route your traveling with the new waypoints feature, where you can search for gas stations (more on that in a minute), parking, auto repair and more that are on your way. Then there's the addition of full voice control for reporting incidents to the rest of the community for Android phones, and an inbox for updates from the Waze community. The big news is the real-time gas search, which allows you to say a couple of bucks when you're at the pumps. In addition, Waze has partnered with Kum & Go, Hess, Mid-Atlantic Convenience Stores (BP and Exxon stations) and Vintners Distributers (Shell) locations to bring in-app discounts on gas to users. As outrageous as gas prices are getting, this is something everyone should try.

Of course everything else you love (or heard about everyone else loving if you haven't tried Waze yet) is still there -- real-time traffic, social integration, speed trap reports, and fun. The best part is that it's all free!

Hit the break for a short video, a handful of app screenshots, and Waze's press release

Figure out different ways that you can advertise your website. Some easy ways to share your site are to post on blogs, use social media, and put posters in businesses in your area. There are many ways to get people to come to your site. Creativity helps when you are trying to set yourself apart from the rest.

Viral videos and media can help improve the success of your website. You should also add a link to your site in the video?s description. This can help improve your daily traffic in an effort to boost sales.

The security of all third party transactions is essential for high volume sales. Many services exist that are impartial. VeriSign and McAfee are two examples of services that can help keep customer information safe. Security systems can cost money, but they are absolute necessities for doing business online safely.

Take advantage of the vast realm of information available online. Since the internet is always changing, it is best that you constantly research and acquire as much knowledge as possible as to what is taking place on the popular sites, so you too can stay up with the times and keep your customers.

Advertise your company with the Internet?s most popular sites. This can make a big difference for exposure. A website that has a steady, high volume of traffic can expose your ads to a limitless number of people, every one of whom is a potential buyer.

A good way to promote your products online is to offer discounts. You can easily do this by listing the discounted price and the original price together next to a certain item. Also, make your special sound good. For instance, say something along lines of ?Order now and get (insert product) for half off?!

When writing content, use simple and plain language to make your points or describe your products. Actually using the word ?easy? in your content will get you some added attention. People avoid products that seem complicated, so adding descriptions like ?easy to order? or ?easy to use? will tempt customers to try your product. People will not order a product if they are confused or feel like they will not be able to use it right away.

Video marketing is a wonderful way to advertise your business. Videos are great at retaining the attention of potential customers. Increased visibility will increase traffic and improve sales.

Posting press releases are great ways to boost traffic for your Internet marketing. If you are not a great writer, there are sources online that provide you with your own press release in your niche. This is a quick and easy way to raise your visibility.

Make sure your Internet marketing contains updated content on a consistent basis to help create more interest for customers. When you?ve found what works best, be consistent in approach. Paying attention to your customers will really pay off.

If you haven?t yet, you should think about developing a squeeze page in order to build up your contacts. This will encourage visitors to enter their email addresses. You can offer a promo item in exchange for the contact information. This service will help both you and the visitor.

Use a lot of headlines on your websites and in ezines. Employ interesting headlines and special offers to bring customers to your website. In fact, the idea is to grab the visitor?s attention, so to that end it doesn?t have to be a headline in the classical sense. You could add a cool graphic image. It can seem more professional to use graphics.

Make sure that your site has something unique about it. You will be more likely to drive traffic to your site if they are looking for your niche. People will then investigate what else you have to offer, and that will bring your site legitimacy and helping your page ranking.

Your eyes should be open as to how you can market your business through the internet. There are many different ways you can approach this. There is also so much information available to help you reap the benefits. Follow these helpful tips and you can find success.

Princess Precious Moment: Hamaguri Soup and Seasoned Squid

Last week, there is a Korean fair going on KLCC and in my previous entry I did mentioned I bought one big tupperware of kimchi....

I love hamaguri or clams...
For quick dinner here goes my version of Hamaguri Kimchi Soup :

Ingredients :

* 1 pack of hamaguri
* 3 cloves of garlic
* 3 - 4 leaves of kimchi
* Water for the soup

Preparation :

Bring water to boil with smash garlics.
Add in Hamaguri and kimchi and bring to boil again for 2 minutes....
Ready to serve.... oh! you can add salt if you want but me think the kimchi juice is enough to season the soup. Oh! you can add add soft beancurd if you like...me think this soup is enough for my simple dinner.
You can eat with hot rice....
Me drink it just like this and not big fan of rice though!

To have that korean feel...drink the soup and one hand with pair of chopstick digging out for this seasoned squid which I bought at the korean food fair.... wohhohohohoho....
I am loving it!!!!

Grindr?s Joel Simkhai Announces 4M Users, 1M Daily Uniques, And Weighs In On The Skout Disaster

Screen shot 2012-06-16 at 1.25.49 PMI love Grindr, and not just because it's all about the gays. (Full disclosure: I'm super gay.) The reason I love Grindr is because it's one of the few location-based social networks to show sustained growth and user loyalty, and with that, Grindr is making a difference in the political realm through Grindr for Equality. I brought Joel Simkhai into our studio to get a bit of a status update on not only Grindr but Blendr, the open-to-everyone location-based social network. He proudly announced that in the past three months, Grindr has surpassed 4 million users (with 500,000 new users in the last quarter alone), and 1 million active daily uniques.

Reyne Haines: Celebrity Artist --Richard Grieco

Longtime actor Richard Grieco is taking his creativity to the next level. He's going from the big screen to a big canvas. Over the last 20 years Grieco has had a hidden talent little knew about: painting.
Always painting for personal pleasure, Grieco had never considered selling his work. Friend and fellow artist Dennis Hopper urged him to share his creativity with the world. His ability to translate emotion on to canvas is easy to see. It's no wonder his fans have responded so positively.

I caught up with Grieco recently and spoke more about his art, inspiration and what is coming up for the emerging artist. Having painted for nearly 20 years, I was quite surprised to learn he had never really shown his work before. Until recently, he occasionally uploaded photos of finished paintings to his Facebook page or Twitter. "I was amazed at the response I have received from simply uploading photos of my art to my Facebook page" said Grieco. "My paintings have found homes with art collectors and fans all over the world!" Grieco is all too modest. He has actually sold hundreds of thousands of dollars of artwork off the two social media pages.

With the response being so positive, he decided to move forward with a website showcasing new works and sold items. He mentioned a few shows in the near future including an auction at the world renowned auction house, Bonham's. All proceeds will go to APLA (Aids Project of Los Angeles) on June 29-30th. "I'm excited to have one of my paintings selling in the same venue [that shows works by] Marc Chagall, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Ed Ruscha."

Currently, he is putting together his first art exhibition for a gallery in Las Vegas slated for November of this year.

Grieco's work has been compared to that of Jackson Pollack and Willem DeKooning. Ironically, he told me his is most inspired by artists painting much earlier such as Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Bacon, Klimt and Pollack.

PST: Germany and Portugal look formidable

Grading out Group A

The extent to which each team has met expectations.

Germany, B- ? Yes, they went through group perfect, but there are still some unanswered questions. They didn?t seem to hit top gear against Portugal or Denmark, which might recommend them. What will they do once they start trying? Then again, what if they are trying?

Portugal, A- ? You couldn?t have expected more than this from Portugal, and given how much trouble they were having scoring goals ahead of this tournament, their five group stage goals give fans reason to thing Paulo Bento?s team is catching a run of form going into the quarterfinals.

Denmark, C ? They talked up their chances to get out of group, but missing out on the quarterfinals can?t be a shock. Having upsetting the Netherlands in round one, they take a memory home from Ukraine.

Netherlands, F ? Amongst reasonable predictions, this wasn?t even a scenario. Three games and three losses was unpredictable.

Crystal Ball: What Needs to Happen Next Round

There?s a huge danger Germany will overlook Greece. While you?ll hear a lot about Germany not being the type of team that stumbles in these spots, they?re still a very young team, and questions surrounding their mentality have been asked since Bayern lost to Chelsea. Germany needs to avoid the type of lapses that befell Russia and Poland, and they?ll likely need a moment of precise execution to score their first goal.

For Portugal, it really is a fortunate draw. That will be a talking point between now and Thursday, but think about the Czech Republic?s attack. They?re getting nothing from Milan Baros. Tomas Rosicky needs to be reintegrated. Their strength is on the outside, but who do Portugal have there? Probably the tournament?s best fullback tandem (to date): Joao Periera and Fabio Coentrao. And where we saw the Czech so vulnerable to Russian counters, it worth asking how they?ll deal with Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani.
